Operation DragoonOperation Dragoon was the Allied invasion of southern France that took place on August 15th 1944. The landing took place between Toulon and Cannes, with the initial assault force consisting of 3 American divisions and 1 Free French armoured division. Additionally, American, British and French commando and airborne formations participated in the invasion. Furthermore, the invasion forced was supported by French, British and American battleships, 7 Allied escort carriers, and over 50 cruisers and destroyers. ![]() Over ninety-four thousand Allied troops, and eleven thousand vehicles, were land on the first day of the invasion. German resistance was relatively weak, as many German forces had been moved to northern France to fight the Allied forces which had previously landed in Normandy. After the landing, the Germans rapidly retreated, and the principal obstacle to the Allied advance was lack of supplies, especially vehicle fuel, rather than German opposition. Nevertheless, the Operation Dragoon force met up with the Allied forces advancing from Normandy in mid-September in the vicinty of Dijon. |
